It is available in an easy-to-use liquid form and contains the following medications:
- Benzocaine: a topical anaesthetic that quickly numbs pain.
- Antipyrine: an analgesic that helps decrease pain and swelling.
cap and replace with dropper. Warm the solution by holding the bottle with your hands for 1-2 minutes. Fill ear canal with head inclined or while lying down. If necessary, moisten a cotton ball with Auralgan®
and insert in the ear. Do not apply more than 3-4 times daily. Do not use more than the recommended
dose. Children (2 – 12 years): application should be supervised by an adult.
Active Ingredients: (in each mL) Antipyrine 54 mg, Benzocaine 14 mg
Inactive Ingredients: Glycerin, oxyquinoline sulfate.
Warning: Health Canada advises Canadians that a rare but potentially serious blood condition known as methemoglobinemia has been associated with the use of topical benzocaine products. Signs and symptoms include pale, grey or blue-coloured skin, lips, or nail beds; shortness of breath; fatigue; confusion; headache; lightheadedness; nausea; and change in heart rate. These symptoms can appear within minutes or one to two hours after benzocaine use, and can occur after the first or several uses. Other reported side effects associated with topical benzocaine products include breathing or swallowing difficulties, a swollen tongue or mouth, irregular heartbeat, malaise, body twitching, hypersensitivity, burning, redness, itching, rash, and irritation at the site of administration. These effects can occur with any topical benzocaine product, regardless or product type or benzocaine concentration, in sensitive individuals.
